First post!

My name is Matt and I study journalism at Northeastern. I first picked up a guitar 12 years ago, and now I am finally writing about it! My friends and I have a band coming together at 1474 Tremont St. in Boston, and this blog will be a comprehensive look at our progress as a group. There will be pictures, audio samples and occasional video samples, with analysis of our work in a given day and, eventually, finished versions of original songs by us. The band members are: myself and Justin S. on guitar, Steve D. and Evan W. on vocals, James M. on drums, Tyler M. on bass, and Mike T. on piano (pictures coming soon!). Our ultimate goal is to get a gig, and in Boston that may be incredibly tough to pull off.

But first, like any other new band, we need to start with covers. Fortunately for us, we share a vast mix of musical styles and preferences, and we have all the essential elements of a true rock group. We plan on covering these titles in the very near future:

  • Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla"
  • Journey - "Don't Stop Believin'"
  • Counting Crows - "Mr. Jones"
  • Third Eye Blind - "Crystal Baller"

Most of our covers will end up being mid-to-late 1990s hits, but ever since Mike came aboard to play piano for us, we've been brainstorming for great piano songs. "Layla" is an absolute classic, and has an amazing piano section during the final three minutes. Should be fun to cover. "Don't Stop Believin'" was a favorite tune of ours, well before the 'Sopranos' finale premiered. The other two are the aforementioned '90s hits, two alternative classics from bands in their prime.

Coming soon: pictures of our jam space, the band members, our equipment, and hopefully an audio sample or two!
